    Pink Ivory

Hi all I've managed to get some Pink Ivory blanks and wondered how it turns? I'm almost too scared to mount it on the lathe given what I've read about it, rarity and cost etc. I was lucky enough to pick some up from a guy selling his blanks through ill health, but don't want to ruin them as I...

    Burr Identification and help!

Hi all I was given a couple of pieces this afternoon, which (a) I don't know what it is, and more importantly (b) what to do with them! I can imagine turning burrs is quite an event, although the results can be stunning, but never having tried, I could do with some advice please? Thanks in...

    I don't believe it!!!!!!

After a week of mounting excitement, new CL4 bought at Yandles last week, new bench constructed and installed, tonight was the time to get the new lathe mounted and spinning. So, got the lathe fixed, took the variable speed unit out of the box, removed the head stock cover and...

    Lathe mounting

Hi all, I'm off to Yandles for the show this weekend, with the intention of buying a new CL4. My question is, what is preferable, mounting the lathe on a bench, or splashing out for the leg stands? I assume its down to personal preference, but I am thinking of making a heavy duty bench from...

    Looking to upgrade

After a year or so on my first lathe, a Record Power DML 18SH, the time has come to get something a bit more sensible, but there is so much to choose from! Funds are pretty tight ( as always!), but have seen this advert locally, well, about an hour and a halfs drive away, and seems like a good...

    Coloured pencil bowl

Inspired by Youtube, I thought I'd give one a go. Many hours later, I'm at this stage. Really tough on the tools for some reason, have to sharpen every other cut it seems! We'll see how it turns out eventually  Certainly not the simplest thing I've ever tried :-)

    Yandles Woodworking Show

Hi all Just wondered if there's anyone on here that's going to the Yandles show this weekend? So much stuff on offer, and so little money

    Finishing spalted beech

I have managed to get hold of a lovely slab of spalted beech, and wondered what folks think is the best way to finish? I have made one bowl out of it so far, and finished with sanding sealer and Woodwax 22. I'm not sure as a new turner how long this nice shimmery, shiny finish will last though...

Anyone ID this tool? ( Pt 2)

I bought this one last year at a boot sale for a few quid, but haven't used it, as I'm not sure what it's for? It has an Ashley Isles sticker on the handle, so I'm assuming it is a turning tool of some description, maybe a captive ring tool??? Whatever it is, it looks a nightmare to sharpen. Any...

    Mangowood

Has anyone had experience of turning Mangowood? A friend of mine was going to dump an old coffee table today, so it's now in my garage :-) The legs are a bit knackered after his dogs chewed on them a bit, but there are 2 big slabs making up the top, each about 5 ft long, 13 inches wide and 2 and...

    Sharpening question

Sorry for the generic picture, but I have one of these coving chisels which worked fine, but lately isn't performing as it should and I'm sure would benefit from a good sharpen. Problem being, is that I haven't a clue how to go about it, so any advice would be gratefully received! Many thanks.

    Forstner bits

Can anyone please recommend which Forstner bits they use? I bought a pack from Screwfix which would struggle to cut through balsa wood, they are so bad! I really just need one 42mm for creating holes for tea light holders Thanks!
