    Pink Ivory

Seems expensive to me too http://www.turners-retreat.co.uk/timber ... -5-x-5-x-2 2 x2 x 18 inch spindle blank for £37.00 from Stiles and Bates I was only asking as a relative newbie, and finding nearly every site classing it as rare, so I'll bide my time before turning it, as I'd hate to ruin...

    Pink Ivory

Hi all I've managed to get some Pink Ivory blanks and wondered how it turns? I'm almost too scared to mount it on the lathe given what I've read about it, rarity and cost etc. I was lucky enough to pick some up from a guy selling his blanks through ill health, but don't want to ruin them as I...

    Word of warning

coloured-pencil-bowl-t97089.html This was my one and only effort :-) Used CA glue for this and held together no problem at all. Just took hours, and hours..... :-)

    A bit of spalted firewood...

No, this is what you call spalted firewood! New-ish turner myself, and was so pleased with the figuring in this bowl, just got to the final buffing stage, when... bang! Half the bowl shot off at a ridiculous speed as I was applying obviously too much pressure over a crack I didn't see...

Required output for a light for turning?

As an extra to the strip lights in the garage, I use one of these: http://www.drapertools.com/product/5175 ... -Batteries) Pretty handy, as it has a magnetic base, so can be moved around and fixed to the lathe pretty much wherever you want it.

    Burr Identification and help!

Hi all I was given a couple of pieces this afternoon, which (a) I don't know what it is, and more importantly (b) what to do with them! I can imagine turning burrs is quite an event, although the results can be stunning, but never having tried, I could do with some advice please? Thanks in...

    Record cl4

I bought a CL4 Next Generation a couple of weeks ago ( Sounds like a Star Trek episode! ) Only just managed to get it spinning this evening, thanks to Record Power who kindly forgot to pack the motor pulley, which arrived yesterday after a few pointed phone calls! I have to say though, even after...

    I don't believe it!!!!!!

After a week of mounting excitement, new CL4 bought at Yandles last week, new bench constructed and installed, tonight was the time to get the new lathe mounted and spinning. So, got the lathe fixed, took the variable speed unit out of the box, removed the head stock cover and...

    Lathe mounting

The new bench is now in situ and ready for my new CL4 bought at the weekend I have left the top channel free to fix some kind of membrane or curtain as recommended by Chas, to keep shavings etc from building up on the bottom shelf. The thing weighs a ton, so hopefully will be sufficient! :-)

    Lathe mounting

Hi all, I'm off to Yandles for the show this weekend, with the intention of buying a new CL4. My question is, what is preferable, mounting the lathe on a bench, or splashing out for the leg stands? I assume its down to personal preference, but I am thinking of making a heavy duty bench from...

    Pieces from the shed

That is a really nice job Stiggy! I may have to try that myself one day, once I upgrade my lathe that is. Yet another on my 'to try out' list :D

Summer 16 Challenge Entries Here Please.

Speaking for myself, I do enjoy seeing the work entered into the challenges, as they give me something to aim for many years down the line! There are some stunning entries, and as a relatively new turner, I wouldn't want to embarrass myself with my meagre efforts, which would only score nul...

    Looking to upgrade

After a year or so on my first lathe, a Record Power DML 18SH, the time has come to get something a bit more sensible, but there is so much to choose from! Funds are pretty tight ( as always!), but have seen this advert locally, well, about an hour and a halfs drive away, and seems like a good...
