Keeping the door closed will also help.

    best grain filler ?

I have always been dubious about the way MDF edges 'hold on' to conventional fillers. I think it sucks on them so much that a y curing or drying is compromised. I just use PVA and then Sand smooth.

    Sharing hand tools

Can hand tools ever have more than one master? I don't mind sharing powered tools, except those that require a lot of fettling, but chisel and planes? ? I am being forced to share company owned tools with a right wrecker at the moment and its making my blood boil. Every time he walks off with...

    San Francisco Balcony

It is now being reported as dry rot. The joists were allegedly not sealed properly. No wonder it just sheared away like that. Awful shame.

    San Francisco Balcony

Terrible tragedy in San Francisco. The Daily Mail's website carries quite detailed pictures of the failed balcony, which looks to be based on projecting timber joists. Does anyone with more knowledge than me have an opinion on what might have caused this awful event?

    Central Heating / Radiators Help

Was the system drained right down prior to the installation? Air locks can occur in the flow and return, and play all sorts of tricks. Bleeding the rad in the conventional manner won't shift it. The technique employed in this video has worked for me many times...

Shutting the door once the horse has bolted... security tips

I used to work for a guy whose motto was "if you catch 'em, kill em." And that's what we used to do. I have to admit, the thrill saws all in the catching. The killing just left you feeling dead on the inside.

advice! has anyone shared their workshop?

Me too! It's the only time I get any real peace. There are two workshops in my life, the aforementioned in the back garden which is off limits to the rest of humanity and the one at work which I have to share. My colleague is as sound as a pound in many ways, however he is a smoker. Of course...

    Energy price saving 'con'

I am always resentful of the way they project your estimated annual usage, and then spread the whole lot equally over 4 quarters for you to pay by DD. Why should I assist a multi billion pound business with its cash flow over the lean summer months? More to the point, why should I be penalised...

    Terminating an electric cooker

A 10 kw electric shower requires a 10mm cable because it is drawing close to 45 amps on start up. Your cooker might come close to this, but only with every ring, hot plate, grill and oven combination going at full chat - which is where the manufacturers 11.5 kw figure comes from.

    LED Light Panels

We have been retrofitting these: http://www.hispec.co.uk/15w-led-univers ... nal_tabbed Inside round bulkheads previously occupied by 28 watt 2 D fluorescent tubes. The light is a colder colour, but much brighter, and with zero warm up time, a much more useful and economical light source.

    Drawing plans.

I'm going through this process with a small extension right now. It was easy getting planning consent with my amateurish fag packet sketches. However, despite the simplicity of the project - a 3x5 metre single storey lean-to, the builder was very dubious of going ahead without proper drawings...
