    Green Oak Balls - WIP

...but it's hard to know how round they need to be and the customer pays you when they're delivered not in a year or two when dry. The really clever thing to do would have been to make them slightly squatter and let the tangential and radial shrinkage make them rounder when dry but they'd still...

    Green Oak Balls - WIP

I'd be amazed if those balls didn't split although green oak's a lot less likely to split outdoors than indoors. I think it depends what you want the finials to look like. I like the silvered weathered look of untreated oak and in that case the cheapest way to get there is to turn them green...

What on earth am I doing/is wrong?

Have you been able to true-up the blank at all? I assume you're using the 2" O'D's and not the 1" ;-) Could there be a dense or hollow part in the blank making it off-balance? Another possibility problem is your chucking point. Is the dovetail recess full depth - in which case the surrounding...

    Myford ML8 Bearings

+1 for the above comments. The angular contact ball bearing races in the ML8 behave similarly to taper roller bearings in that they are designed to resist pressure on the end of the spindle. Jon

    Small hollowing tool

Hi Woodpig, The Stott miniatures are only 1/4" round tools and so you could try bending another 1/4" round HSS tool such as the negative rake coving tool... http://www.axminster.co.uk/henry-taylor-negative-rake-cove-tool-952458 I think you might need to heat to cherry red and bend it an inch or...

    Record ML360 drive belt

Hi Bob, Is there any of the original printed text on the belt? This can be a real help in finding a replacement which are almost always standard parts easily obtained from an online bearing shop (amazon). I recently was able to obtain new belts for my old Myford ML7 lathe and milling machine...

    Long boring of end grain.

How are you starting the drill in the blank? My suggestion is to use either a machinist's centre-drill to create a small dimple or create a small one with a spindle gouge so that the drill enters dead on centre. The other thing is how well aligned are your tailstock and headstock centres? Did...

    Axminster M900 lathe - Noisy

Hi Glynne, Even if your motor is noisy, Reeves drive lathes like the M900 are noisy and usually most of that comes from the belt and adjustable pulleys. Have you greased your Reeves drive recently? - there should be a grease nipple on the end of the cone pulley shaft. The other thing is that...

    Making your own tools

Dremel cut-off wheels are even thinner and so cut HSS cooler. If you buy your HSS as metal lathe tooling it is a lot cheaper and often you can get more exotic HSS with Cobalt at 5% (M35) or even 8% (M42) which is better IMHO for scrapers than plain old M2. To cut off a short piece you just...

Who is in and who is out?

...Any "Trump effect" will be purged pretty quickly in the grand scheme of things - he will likely only get one presidential term IMHO. Let's not kid ourselves - We'll still be negotiating our exit or still be feeling the fall-out from it when Trump has been and gone.

Who is in and who is out?

+1 for Noel's sentiments My fear is that, contrary to what Gove et al said prior to the vote, the EU will seek to dissuade further potential "exiters" by penalizing the UK through trade tarrifs - After all, there are others contemplating similar decisions and it seems only natural IMHO for them...

Who is in and who is out?

Sorry - clearly misunderstood the irony.

Who is in and who is out?

Sorry, if the debate is descending to xenophobic comments like that then I'm off.

Who is in and who is out?

...and forget about those infuriating global and regional trifles like climate change, Islamic terrorism, nuclear proliferation, international refugees and international trade.

Who is in and who is out?

Hmmm - Some of us who didn't vote for it will have to put up and shut up (and watch our pension plan value delay our retirement) but if you don't mind I'm sparing my thoughts for the family of Jo Cox rather than Boris.

    Making your own tools

Yes, from me. ...but, you don't need a particularly sophisticated metal lathe for simple woodturning tools like these and you can do quite a lot on a wood lathe if you have basic handtools such as files, hacksaw, drills and taps along with some ingenuity. The finish might not be as good but...

    Making your own tools

+1 for using the +ve rake cutters at an angle but that's just like any cutting tool really - You need the bevel rubbing and not too much exposed cutting edge. The beauty of the 6mm cutters is that they seem small enough to be a bit more forgiving if you show the wood a bit too much edge. For...

    Making your own tools

I must admit I really rate the positive rake TCT inserts Simon Hope sells for his pro-hollower which are intended for Aluminium. I made a few 6mm clones for my hollowing rig and they cut more like a ring tool than a scraper. You can buy them here...

    More sharpening woes

Why not just buy a couple of new grinder wheels and continue to use your own jigs? Wheels are consumables and if your wheels are getting small buying a new jig isn't going to get around this problem. As an alternative to the Tormek jigs you could buy the Sorby equivalent jig...
