Should the tension on a bandsaw blade be released at the end of each working day or should this be done only when the saw is not being used for a while? My blades don't last very long.

    turning yew

Is yew good for turning? After a lot of waste I managed to cut some usable timber from a 2x8 inch board. Finding dead wood in the middle of the spindles, I carried on. When I finished the chair legs they split as I was assembling my chair. Was this a case of buying bad timber or is yew not...

    JCB router update

As promised I will rattle on a little about the JCB router that I bought a couple of weeks ago and hope it may be of some use. In the last couple of weeks I have put this machine through its paces, using mostly hard wood and have found it to be very good, for its purpose ( an amateur hobbyist )...

I am making a garden table, all the joints are cut, all the slats are trimmed and shaped and I am ready to assemble. Following a tip last week on what glue to use I am ready to glue all the mortise and tenon joints, but should I glue the slats into the rebate I have cut into the table top or...

    Bandsaw blade tension

Can any one give me a little advice on blade tension on my bandsaw? I was told to tension the blade so that it moves about a quarter of an inch on the side opposite the roller guides. This I have done without much success. Is there a more reliable method without spending a fortune on tension...

    Filling holes in Elm

Hi! Aled, I work a lot with elm, (be it on an amateur level) and depending on the amount of worm damage and the area it covers I usually drill out the damaged section pop in a pellet of elm from the same board if possible, orient the grain direction and sand it flush when dry. Give it a try on...

iroko, to seal or not to seal

Thanks for the tip, I will give teak oil a try on an offcut first. Is it straightforward to apply? Is it brushed on and wiped off or just left to soak in and re-applied? Also can any-one recommend a suitable glue for Iroko for exterior work. Thanks! John

    Advice please on Trend Airsheild

I have seen some advertisements for a full face respirator, the Trend airsheild pro. I am considering whether to buy one. The problem at the moment is the price, are they as good as the advertisements claim? Can any one give me some feedback as to their worth. Also are they heavy to wear over a...

iroko, to seal or not to seal

I am in the early stages of making some garden furniture, I have bought some iroko. I have been told that it does not require any sealer or finish. I am tempted to apply a couple of coats of teak oil or something similar. Can any one please advise me what, if any, finish should be applied as the...

    jcb router

Thanks for the input Mick, sounds a bit scarey with the JCB router, I've just bought one. After getting it home I gave a good coat of looking at, twiddled with it and poked it about. The machine looks to be fairly well constructed, it comes with a guide bush, a dust extraction tube, roller...

    Help for a lowly beginner

Thanks Colin, I do own a couple of woodturning books (however, not the one you recomended) but it would be nice to have some-one to advise you on how to avoid the mistakes before they happen. I am thinking of joining a woodwork club, but at the moment I have no transport (just waiting to get...

All I want to do is cut my lawn

The rioters in Manchester are getting too light a sentence, I think they should be sentenced to at least six months cutting my lawn and the looters could probably provide there own new lawn mowers.
