    Advice on 16A mains sockets

Much better to install a 20A mcb in the consumer unit and run a 2.5mm² cable to as many 16A sockets as you need. The regulations allow this, providing the after diversity demand is 20A or less. That would normally apply to a workshop with only one man working in it, because he can only operate...

how much to charge for making and fitting oak front door!!!

Think of an overall reasonable price that they should feel happy with. Then see if you can make and fit the door within that budget. Without knowing the cost of materials or the time needed, I'd think £1,000 reasonable. Now, can you make a profit out of that?

    Help needed (what are these)

Those clamps are obsolete. This is what's used these days; cheaper and much easier to use. BTW, it's a dialysis needle. I get two of them shoved in my arm three times a week. :-&

    Magnets for jigs?

Magnetron magnets are really powerful. I got one when I was a kid and tested it everywhere. It slowed the disk on the electricity meter down to almost a standstill. A few weeks later, my parents grumbled about their electricity bill. A quarter later still and the bill had sky rocketed...

    My first proper tools

The Woodstar PT85 P/T is one badge of a number of almost identical machines with different badges. They all suffer from the same defect; the fence is useless. Trouble is, you have to pay three times as much to get something like Hudson suggests. I never found anything in between. If you only...

    Which router table

Rutlands have a half price offer on their router table. I bought one last time they had it on offer and I can recommend it. http://www.rutlands.co.uk/cgi-bin/psPromotions.cgi?promo=58

    woodstar 8"x5" planer/thicknesser comments please!

Same P/T, different badge & model numbers: Charnwood, Clarke, Fox, Sealey, SIP I own the Fox. The Fox suffers from one overwhelming fault and I guess the nameplate variants do too. The fence is useless! It's a popular P/T because the other functions are OK and the price is low. Hopefully...

    Y versus Delta Wiring

Are you sure it's not a single phase motor, that requires a split phase 3-wire supply of 120V—0—120V? Check that it does not have a starting capacitor and it's almost certainly three phase. If your VSD requires a star connected winding, I guess it will need it because it has to be connected to...

    Question for a sparky

If you have a "universal" motor, which has a commutator and is noisy, then it would be a suppression capacitor. The motor will run without the capacitor If you have an induction motor, which has no commutator and is quiet running, then it will be a starting or running capacitor. The motor won't...

    Tuffsaws...again!!

I've got a Scheppach bandsaw with it's original manufacturer supplied blade. I suspect a better blade would improve it, but what sort of improvement should I expect? How does it make the improvement? What should I see for it?

    Tenoner help please.

A varistor is normally a high resistance, but starts to conduct above a threshold voltage. That could stop external sources of voltage spikes from interfering with your machine. It won't stop your machine from causing electromagnetic interference though unless the unit includes capacitors too.

    Proops of Leicester

Maybe the current Proops is nothing like the old Proops, it would still be a sad day if they close. I must tell this story that concerns the old Proops when I bought stuff from them, sparking a personal technical interest every bit as much as Meccano did. In 1948 Aneurin Bevan created the NHS...

    Your Opnions or Experiences wanted

There are no "local" planning laws, only the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. The Local Planning Authority may differ from town to town over its implementation though. You can try to get away with 7 foot gates. If you manage to do so for 4 years, you will be in the clear, the LPA cannot take...

    Do Wasps Damage Wood?

Yes, cyanide. I bought it from Boots around 1965. Had to jump through hoops. A form had to be signed by a neighbour to say that I was a fit person, then by the police to say that both my neighbour and I were fit persons. Turned out my neighbour had a conviction for cycling without lights when...
