Sonokeling is just the name for plantation grown Indian rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia). I used to go through pallet loads of this stuff in the late 1980's. It's quite diverse in it's colouring, ranging from dark browns and blacks to lighter tans, bright oranges, purples and greens and deep rich...

You could knock one together yourself using the tutorials and ideas over at Handplane Central.

I LOVE this plane! It's great for grooving drawer bottoms and doing small detailed work. Found some info on this Record planes site. Just basic stuff but the site looks pretty good.

Kauri is a little soft for plane making generally. Not sure why they have that listed under hardwoods either?

Tis a shame, but the good news is that there's plenty more Stanley # 5's out there.....And a lot of them are quite cheap. Who knows, you might end up with a better one than the one you had?
