Very nice looking saws Rod. I've got a carcass saw with a black walnut handle on order from Mike. I hope it looks as good as your's.

I'll buy the second. The chamfer plane is one I've been hoping Lie-Nielsen would reproduce.

    My LN 5 1/2 has rusted :(

Unfortunately I too suffer from the "rusty fingers of death" so you can add that to the salt air and the humidity that I referred to above. Wax seems to do the trick though. I mentioned in my previous post that I am currently using Renaissance Wax. Well, I've also used U-beaut Traditional Wax...

    My LN 5 1/2 has rusted :(

I agree with Alf on this. My current protectant of choice is the Renaissance Wax that Evergreen mentioned above. My garage workshop is only about 200 metres from the ocean so salt fallout from the air is a problem. Also, Sydney can get relatively humid in summer, not as humid as parts of...

Veritas vs. LN Large Router plane

Veritas vs. LN Large Router plane

I have one of the Lie-Nielsen large router planes and I have no complaints. I've used the Lie-Nielsen for trimming tenon cheeks, with the aid of a sub-base I made. You can read more detail of this process here and here. I've also used it for cutting out the little section between mortices...

how do you treat your plane?

Mostly A, sometimes B but never C. I think it's what my Dad taught me. It certainly didn't come from school. I never saw a handplane at school during the years I was doing woodwork.

    My first post

Welcome to the forum Graham. I wish I could say that. Any chance of an Australian expansion Rob? A Sydney store would be great. [-o< :D

    which Plane?

Hi Mike, My first decent plane was an adjustable mouth low angle block plane, a 60-1/2. I have since acquired a number of other decent planes but the little 60-1/2 is still probably the one I use the most. A low angle jack plane is also a versatile plane but I don't use mine as much as the...

    shooting boards

When you're using a shooting board you want to aim for shavings like this. This was done on a simple MDF mitre shooting board I made, using a No. 8 plane. I sometimes use my No. 8 on a shooting board because the weight helps the plane sail through the cut. The wood in the picture above is...

    Circular rebates

I posted some scans of the Tectool Two-Cutter Plough Plane a while back. The scans are from old copies of Woodworker magazine. Here is the original thread.
