What’s the tool called for manhandling logs around ...its sort of a bar with a swinging hook that grips the log and then you lever the log around ?
I’ve seen them used when people are putting logs on bandsaw mills

But can i find one without knowing what its called

I googled logging tool and came up with Felling bar with hook.
shopping

Yep felling lever with hook.

Other handy tools for handling heavy logs are timber tongs and a log pick.

Personally I consider a felling bar with a hook to be a not very good substitute for a cant hook.
You need the felling bar to make big trees fall in the right direction and you cannot carry both a felling bar and a cant hook with you in the woods so then the substitute cant hook is very appropriate.
At a log buiding site or a band sawmill sawing big logs you want a proper canthook.

I think it is called cant hook because you use it to turn the cant on the saw table.

Another great tool for handling and loading logs by hand is a Hällnäslyft.

Mine was made by Jonsson&Lagerkvist back when they still had a three digit phone number.
Nowadays the company is called Lameco AB and rumours say that they still make them. Logosol sells another version on the same concept.
