Smile though your heart is breaking.

A crib from "High Hopes" a TV soap on life in the South Wales valleys shown on BBC1 Wales. The sobbing bloke was Max Boyce. Well worth a watch if you get the chance.

    Flat Roof leak!...advice please!

Forget all that palaver about Building Regs. & insulation etc, etc. All you want, I presume, is a flat roof that will last and not leak. Felt and its derivatives are notorious for lasting only a few years and then failing due to UV exposure etc. If you want a reliable flat roof covering that...

Anyone know about silver hall marks?

I tried to post a reply yesterday but for some obscure reason it got scratched. I have a similar item left in this house which I bought from the old village grocer. It's not a letter opener, although it can be used as such, but a knife for slicing greaseproof paper which grocers and butchers...

    How to roughen wood

I've been using Bluetit boxes made from unroughened ply for at least 20 years now and have never had a trapped chick. What I do provide though is a 10mm dowel perch running from front to back of the box, projecting about 50mm at the front, just below the entrance hole. Fledglings are very athletic.

    Wasps !

I live on the edge of a country park - lots of trees and wildlife etc - so wasps are an annual problem. Rentokil do an aerosol foam spray Wasp Nest Killer which I have found to be very successful in dealing with these pests. It's not too expensive and obtainable from the likes of B&Q and garden...

    Patio Problem

The problem is not ants, but these tiny flying & burrowing insects which I have not yet identified. Possibly they're ant predators, so if I kill off all the ants maybe they'll just go away. Watch this space. A bloke from the RHS thought I was lucky to have them as they probably kill aphids...

    Patio Problem

No, it's definitely not a wind up nor is it the ants themselves - the insects are too small to be flying ants and it's the wrong time of year for them anyway. However, I've noticed that the concentration of sand heaps are in areas where we've previously had a problem with ant's nests, so maybe...
