It's a fairly underpowered motor at 250w. I'm not sure Charnwood are the most well regarded. Lathes are one of those things where you think one will do the job but you quickly find that if you don't buy a decent one you either can't do what you want or you end up having problems turning because either the motor isn't powerful enough or you get a lot of vibration and chatter because it's not solidly built.

It's best to go for the best you can afford and you won't then be disappointed and put off buy not being able to do what you want.

have you considered the Jet mini lathe?

It is more expensive but well regarded and sturdily built. I have one. You have a bit more power in the motor so it will cope with bigger items and it's trade rated so the motor will cope with running for longer which is always an advantage as you will undoubtably want to do slightly bigger things eventually and you can get a good selection of chucks from Axminster or for pens you don't even need a chuck...

The Charnwood is only 1MT too which is ok but 2MT is more standard I think and the Jet has that.

other people will might know more about the Charnwood.

I agree with the above comments also it is only hobby rated and in my experiences anything that is hobby rated always under performs and never last very long you would do better to look for something like the Jet or even maybe a small Axminster remember the old saying if it seems to good to be true
