Hi,

My new workshop is finally coming together and I am able to start planning the internals. One thing that I want to achieve is good dust control and I am planning to buy (or make) a decent air filter.

I wondered what other people's experiences have been and any recommendations. My workshop is 30m2 floor area and an average ceiling height of about 2.5m. I do general woodwork, no turning and use a bag type extractor on my planer thicknesses, but the bag does let fine stuff through.

I have read that Microclene filters are noisy, but they also seem to collect finer dust than others?

Regards,

Colin

They are 'noticeable' if you are stood in a quiet workshop with nothing going on but once you start concentrating on what you are doing, and have other machines going on and off, you don't really notice them so much. Switching mine on doesn't bother me :)

I have a Microclene and an Axy ceiling type.
According to my noise meter, they both produce to same Db's but they have different frequencies/pitch which makes the Microclene appear to sound louder?

I too have a couple, a Jet (like the Axi) and a Microclene but for preference tend to use the Jet as it seems less noisy, or possibly as Rod says is on a different frequency.

They are both very effective though.

You need to minimise the amount of dust getting into the air in the first place though and if your bag type extractor is one with cloth bag filters you might want to look at replacing the filter bag with a cannister filter which will be a lot more effective on the dust.

Likewise attaching a well filtered portable vac to power tools like sanders and planers etc will help capture at source.

Cheers, Paul

+1 on the cartridge filter.

I got one of the SIP Microclene clones off of ebay for £25 quid. Running both cartridge and microclene together makes a massive difference.
