Any suggestions how these were done?

My guess is:

  • Cut into slices
  • Each slice planed smooth
  • Each slice heated/steamed and clamped up in a two-part curved form that holds it at a curve a little more exaggerated than the one required (there always seems to be some spring-back)
  • Once the slices are cooled and set into shape, they're glued up again at the ends
  • Once the glue is dry, the ends are turned/shaved/carved/whatever and everything gets sanded smooth

EDIT: I'm sure it's paint, but I can't help but see the blue ring at the end as a bit of masking tape... ;-)

Thanks for the quick replies. I may try this on my bamboo bike instead of trying to make a pair of leaf springs. It looks far more elegant
