The chap whose wood this is reckons it's chestnut, but it's darker than any chestnut I've ever seen before. So not so sure. Anyone know?

Not like any Sweet Chestnut I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot!), could well be Steamed Black Walnut though
 
We cut up a large Walnut that fell over a couple of years ago and it was exactly the same inside. Here's a finished bit.
