This was culled from a thread on UK.DIY usenet. The query had been about cleaning a 1950's clock case. Any comments would be interesting

"to clean it make up a mix in equal quantities of:
Meths
Vinegar
Boiled linseed oil
Turps
Apply with a very fine wire wool and wipe off the dirt with a rag.

To re-polish bare wood heat up Furniture polish with 30-40% boiled
linseed oil and apply with a rag. This should soak into the wood and
can be polished up 20 minutes later. This won't work if it already has
a finish. The cleaning mix works on finished wood."

It's an excellent mixture and often it will be all that is needed to take off the dirt but not spoil an old item by making it look brand new.

I did a picture-heavy thread about it here.

Thanks guys - I always prefer to get confirmation from the 'professionals'

DM - your Oscar Wilde quote has a typo in it. It might be that if you can resist everything you could expect temptation - but it should be "except temptation", which of course is true for all of us.
