Morning all,

Couple of questions, back ground below:

1. What size timber are window stiles typically made out of?
2. My windows will be affixed to the stud frame prior to glazing so I'm leaning towards thinking 45mm frames will be ok, am I totally off the mark?

I have a set of tall narrow windows to make for the new shed (1.8m x 0.5m). They are non-opening DG windows that I plan to make from Douglas Fir. My original design had the stiles made out of 75mm x 55mm timber. However the Douglas Fir boards that are available locally are 2" thick, so realistically these would give me a max 45mm thick timber to work with once dressed.

Cheers

Fitz.

The spacer bar in the glass is usually 12mm and ideally you want 5mm air gap, so your rebate can be say from 16 to 18mm.

If you use a 45mm section you would be left with 27mm which is fine on a direct glazed frame.

The bottom may require a cill projection so the bottom is normally thicker, although you could make from 45mm timber then add another piece underneath.

Thanks Robin, you've given me the bit of extra confidence I needed to send my cutting list off to the wood supplier for 2" boards.

Cheers Fitz.
