I'm looking to upgrade my lathe fairly soon, but every time I see one I like at a price I can afford they are all collection only and sooooo far away. ](*,)
I know I will only get a small window of opportunity before some big bill comes in and hoovers up what I have earmarked for a lathe.

It makes me wonder, are there so few Scots turners, or do we buy lathes and never sell them on? Or am I missing out on some underground movement where machinery is bought & sold like illicit substances?

It's all very frustrating.

ask if they will put it on a pallet may cost about £80.00
I've looked into this before, and by the time I pay that for delivery, I can add just a small amount more & get one brand new from Axi or similar.

Perhaps all the Scottish lathes end up with Nessie
She's got no thumbs...... That's just greed :D

I have the same problem watching ebay ,gumtree forums for Lathe but quality lathes seem to be very scarce up here even few and far between in north of England, when you are looking for something all the turners seem to live in Corwall or Devon.

Yep! That's what I find too.
I saw a nice looking CL3 with swivel head a wee while back in the Cumbria area, but it was "buyer must dismantle & collect withing 24 hours of auction end."
WTF?
Didn't even respond to my question about me sending a courier.

Hi

Sell your lathe first, then put the proceeds with what you've set aside and buy something new - why wait for something that may never turn up?

Why don't used lathes seem to turn up much north of the border? - Perhaps the Scots are canny enough to buy the right lathe in the first place

Regards Mick

You could always move south, my brother in law is from Scotland and no harm has come to him

Seriously I don't think it makes any difference where you live if you are after something it always is at the opposite end of the country to where you live.

Sods Law comes to mind

That could be the case. Or maybe we weight them in @ £130 a tonne :D

Grass is always greener....I see loads of bargains on fleabay and look at location and it's in deepest darkest Scotland....

Bit far away (for most people!) but there's someone in Elgin who keeps advertising woodturning stuff in ScotAds Highland.

As OP has noticed, it can be difficult finding s/h turning stuff in Scotland, especially in the more sparsely populated lands north of the Central Belt. On the other hand, having the oil industry in Aberdeen means that engineering stuff and services is more readily available than it was in SE Englandshire.

Swings and roundabouts?

I must have missed it Taz, what type of lathe are you waiting for ?
I want something with a bigger turning capacity than my ML8, but want to keep the length too - although I rarely turn anything long, I have done quite a few walking sticks and the obligatory bats for the dog walkers.
I have a very limited budget, so pro or trade type machines are out of the question. I'm currently looking at the Record Power lathes (but want one with swivel head), Axi AWVSL range, plus Fox. Draper etc. of similar design.
I got my current lathe for nowt, so trying to convince t'missus that this is an important purchase isn't easy. I want to find something before wee fat President Eck takes over the free world and closes the borders. It's hard to buy anything outside Scotland with empty ginger bottles as it is. Who knows what the exchange rate is likely to be.

Ahhh Soo

Walking sticks are very popular and sell really easily for surprising amounts of money, as do doggie bats, wooden bowls, salmon priests, Scottish thistle vases, etc etc. so it will be a good investment.

No idea if that is true but it might persuade SWMBO.

Though on reflection, didn't work with mine :)

Never thought of Gumtree really. I know a bloke who got held up for a car by some neds when he replied to a Gumtree ad so always avoided it.
Having a wee rake now.

Don`t worry about that! It`s only a matter of time until he promises free lathes for all Scottish woodturners.

Its the Law according to Sod... I have bought 2 lathes on fleabay and both were at least a 200mile round trip to collect. On both occasions the following week there was the same lathe on sale within 10 miles of my home
