I bought this today. I notice it was pretty heavy. Is it maybe some kind of rosewood?

Thanks.

Interesting, i've not heard of Pau Rosa before but it does seem a good match. Most Bubinga picture look like a slightly lighter wood. It feels almost as hard and heavy as ebony.

When you get off-cuts of both in the bin it can be hard to distinguish them, Pau Rosa should give you the brighter red fine dust if sanded or cut, stains everything.

Samples I have, the Pau Rosa has harder smoother shiny surface where it's been machined, Bubinga has slightly wider pores.

My vote would have been either bubinga or padouk. I know padouk is normally redder, but if left put can be the orangey Brown in the photos.
Does it have an unpleasant smell when cut? I often find bubinga smells of cow muck when sawn.

If anything it is slightly darker in real life than in the pictures.

Here's a few shavings, they have very little scent.

Today I sent it through the planer and also put a seal coat of shellac just to see what it would look like. Shame it's not bigger as its very nice wood.
