Which Epoxy Resin (+ colour)

Evening All,

I'm planning to create a routed or scroll sawn name plate for a couple of my nephews. I would like to fill them with resin + colour. I've seen quite a few videos (e.g. Matt Cremona) doing this kind of thing, but i have no idea where to start buying this kind of stuff here in the UK.

I could do with some advice / guidance on which epoxy resin to buy, and where I can get a number of colourings from.

Self degassing (no bubbles) and you can add colour pigments (also available from a link near the bottom of that page)

Can someone tell me whether it is possible to thicken coloured epoxy up into a fairly stiff paste? I have a project coming up where I won't have access to the underside, and it isn't impossible that there will be very small gaps here and there which a liquid mixture will just run through. Something of the texture of grout, or putty, would do the trick nicely.

I have used a thixothropic thickener in the past, though not for this application.
Certainly turns the resin to a nice paste type consistency. Sourced from same supplier as the resin.

Might be worth giving them a ring if you are unsure which would suit your application best.

Or maybe "apply" a thick coat in a few places where you feel it might run out and when tacky pour in the rest?

It's easy to thicken liquid epoxies as practically any fine powder will do the necessary, finer sanding dust is commonly used for the purpose which presumably is something have ready access to Talc can also be added to aid sandability if that might be of help.

But you can buy commercial epoxy putties with a long open time, Milliput probably being the best known in the UK and is the most widely available. It's also made in the widest range of colours: white, yellow/grey, silver grey, terracotta and black I think are still the colours available retail.

If none of these colours is suitable any lighter-coloured epoxy putties can be tinted with a few dabs of acrylic or enamel paint to nearly any colour you want.

West Epoxy offer a range of additives to do exactly this, it's common in boat building to want to build up a "fillet" of epoxy, sometimes this will even be overhead. Consequently West offer all the necessary plus comprehensive advice. If West prices come as a shock I'd still start with their technical advice, but then look to replicate it elsewhere at a lower price.
