hi all,

new to the forum so forgive me if this is placed in the wrong location.

I have a small workshop and at the moment only have a table saw (max rip size approx 1m), and am looking for the best place to buy hardwoods planed and cut to size. Currently living in newbury berks. can anyone point me in the right direction?

Many thanks

You're very fortunate living so close to Tylers, they are an exceptional timber yard.

Don't be intimidated when you first go, it's a huge place but they're very accomodating to both large and small customers. Park in the car park on the right and introduce yourself at the portacabin. It would be useful if you had a pretty clear idea of what you want, as although they have great customer service it's not really a self selection/browsing kind of place.

By the way, lots of newcomers to woodworking hope to get a quick start on a project by buying ready planed stock. Although it's a tempting idea it does have some drawbacks. Timber yards rarely do a great job on planing and tear out is often quite bad, their sizing is at best approximate and variable even within a batch, and of course even though the wood was planed flat originally it's likely to cup and twist subsequently. So you should be prepared to do at least some remedial planing even on ready planed stock.

Good luck!

There's also Arnold Laver in Reading but Tylers is probably closer to you. Lavers do have an offcuts bin that's worth raiding for lengths of no greater than 1m. They knock them out at very reasonable prices as there's always some problems with them, twist being the most common one. I frequent it from time to time and salvage the thick wide boards which I mill at home for table or cabinet legs/parts, particularly lighter duty stuff (2x2 or less). Over the years I've had a lot of oak from there but also ash, iroko and US black walnut which is lovely stuff.

This cabinet was from Laver salvaged cheap oak. Also the stuff in the boot is straight from the bin (not the planed stuff)
