This seems to be the section to come to if one has a vice and wants some help ;)

I have just been given (well swapped it for a Dave Gilmore dvd) a Parkinsons vice, a No. 41 and there is a tongue / mortice?/tenon? on the front of the vice that pops up and down when required.

Question is whats it for?

its a dog.

If fitted with the casting flush to the surface of the front of your bench, you could insert a (preferably wooden) dog (piece of dowel with a flattened face) in a doghole (ie hole) in your bench, pup up this one and hold a workpiece between the two. A lot like the plastic things that came on top of workmates.

To clamp wide pieces (boards etc.) laying flat on the bench top against a bench dog.

I've never owned a proper bench vice but I remember learning about them at school, your's has a QR too. It has all the attributes of the vice I'd like to get at some point.
