I'm building a land yacht and need to make a mast.

It needs to be pretty straight grained and preferably available in long lengths so i don't have to splice 2 pieces together.

Any sugestions what i should go for?

Thought maybe ash or perhaps douglas fir. Anyone know any reliable timber suppliers that might have what i need?

Douglas fir is the traditional chosen material - but go to the marine specialists (down Hamble-area). Can't suggest a name top-of-head, but there are lots down there, not silly money either.

Yacht masts (land or sea) are always made from softwood, you should be looking for Douglas Fir (also known as Columbian pine) or Stika Spruce.

It is also advisable to make them hollow as weight aloft REALLY effects stability (think leverage) there are a couple of methods but the birds mouth technique although a little complex produces very strong lightweight spars.

A quick google of birdsmouth masts will produce a glut of results

Collars spars may be able to supply you with the wood http://www.collars.co.uk/site/
