Hi

I am looking for a bit of info from those in the know, my wife and i are going to london this weekend and on saturday she is going to a publishing seminar with our son which leaves me free to do as i like. Can anyone reccomend some woodturning related venues exibitions ect where i can while away the day.

We are travelling down by coach so i will be reliant on public transport and will be based in the Brixton area, any help or ideas will be very gratefully received.

Regards

Berns

I'm interested too as I'm quite often in London for odd meetings and stuff and can never really think of any follow on stuff to do after to get best value from the trips, but think that's probably just a complete lack of imagination on my part

I've done all the usual touristy sightseeing, museums, parks and stuff in the past, and don't really enjoy the crowds in Oxford Street and Regent Street etc, so sadly just usually jump on the train and get back home once finished with business !

Cheers, Paul

I thought I would be really helpful and suggest a visit to the Turners' Company, but a quick look at their website shows that their exhibition of 'wizardry in wood' closed in October!

Do have a look at the website - and watch out for it next year.

Also, this thread had some woody (but not turned) suggestions which might help.

I know that the Museum of London has a rose engine ornamental lathe which might be on display again now that they have rearranged the lower floor - worth checking if you are going there specially to see it. Their display of Roman tools is interesting - I can't recall whether it includes a lathe.

The Science Museum owns several lathes but last time I went they seemed to have very few galleries of 'old stuff' with the emphasis firmly on new shiny 'interactive' things instead. But they now have the entire contents of James Watt's workshop on permanent display - that might be worth a peek.

Both of these are free admission.

You could always send your wife and son to London and you jump on a train and head up to Harrogate for the woodworking show

I would have thought a visit to Camden Market would be more entertaining and god knows what you may find.

Not a lot to do in Brixton except get on the tube and get away, it is very close to central London.
I will be going to this next Friday. http://www.barbican.org.uk/artgallery/e ... p?id=13723.
You could also think about getting out a couple of boris bikes (if the son is old enough). Check them out on this site

Get the boat from Westminster bridge to the Thames barrier and you have the choice of several get of points, for instance you could get off at Tower of London on the return, cross over toer bridge and try this. http://southbanklondon.com/free-events.
Like previous response says that not a lot of woody interest in town Christmas markets and alike are on the cards now.

Thank you i think you have solved the problem a few interesting ideas there, went to camden market years ago and now can remember being bowled over by it certainly due another visit, and then back to the southbank seems like plenty to see and do there. so thanks once again.

If you are into it, the 'Bronze' exhibition at the Royal Academy on Piccadilly is amazing. Not only are the exhibits ranged by type, eg 'Animals' 'Gods' etc, but the age of some is amazing, one item dates from 4500BC. It should not be too crowded now as it finishes on 9th Dec
