Going to have a go at fitting out a camper van. Been doing a bit of research and seems you need to watch the weight of the woods used. Came across poplar ply which is apparently popular in builds but wonderd what lighter weight woods might be good to use as well as don't fancy a sea of plastic faced ply for the interior.

Any thoughts and experiences gratefully received :D

I used to do conversion work on coaches many years ago. We used to remove a couple of rows of seats and replace them with a removable Toilet cubicle.( In the event the coach needed all 52 seats, the toilet cubicle could be removed, the floor section replaced and the seats put back in)

According to the guidance and information we received from the Minstry of Transport, we were only allowed to use plywood in the construction of anything wooden. According to them, chipboard or MDF would or could potentially shatter in the event of an accident, whereas plywood was inherently stronger and would not suffer the same effect. This was back in the 80's & 90's so the guidance may have changed now.

Some of it depends on the use, i.e. floor, side and is it facing ply, i.e. will it be on show. Colour may have an impact as well so you may want faced or veneered ply.

I would have thought any good quality external hardwood ply in 9-12mm would suffice and unless you are putting lots in, I can't imagine you will be saving enough weight to warrant going to the effort to source anything too exotic.

Remember to factor in thermal and sound insulation in combination to your ply. This may dictate what thickness you install.
