Just returned from France where I was supervising a bunch of chippies making a very large built in unit on a yacht. It was made of veneered blockboard - soft wood core with a good 2mm veneer either side. Talked to their head lad who said it was fairly easy to get in France but I've never seen it here. He thought it odd as a lot times they order stuff from the UK as there's a better choice here apparently.

Anyone seen it in the UK? Reason I want some is that I will be building some large units and would like to keep the weight sensible - vmdf would weigh a tonne.

It used to be commonly used here. The house I have spent the last 4 years renovating was full of the stuff, put in in the 70s, and now stored neatly away in my sheet materials stash....... :D I had no idea it was still available, and will be interested to see the price.

You can get it here, Meyer Timber sell it, although only in limited finishes.

I would also guess that every branch may not stock it, as it will depend on how much they sell.

Most folks use MDF here now.

I regularly buy 8x4 sheets of oak veneered block board in 19mm thickness from Brooks Brothers in Nottingham. I understand they have branches elsewhere. About £80 per sheet. It's veneered on both faces.
