there's a guy on our local boot sale that has dozens of stains and varnishes that have all been opened. They are dirt cheap, but I'm assuming that they don't last forever once the tins have been opened...... should I bother trying any?

It's quite likely that the tins of varnish will be write offs because they will have skinned, the stains are unlikely to have gone off.

If they're dirt cheap I'd recommend you take a gamble on the whole lot. Obviously test them all on sample pieces of wood first. I'd expect drying times to be extended but they should be fine.

Look forward to hear how you get on.

If they ok,when storing tip them upside down then store as normal this way the varish will dry at the top creating an airtight seal....no skinning.

You can store varnish for a considerable length of time doing this as it is airtight.Works with any paint as well.
