I depends on what you want to make it out of. If you use solid wood (might be too heavy) you can either use mortice & tenon with butt joints or biscuit joints and a mitre. If you use mdf make the boards in a sandwich construction, biscuit and screw and then either veneer all surfaces or lip the edges with a mitre.
 
looks a nice piece of furniture.
would suggest that you think about making it as "torsion box" type of
item. basically this is made just like an old fashioned aircraft wing.
lots of spars, both longwise and across. they are then covered by thin
ply or mdf panels. and then become a very strong item.

if you look at the Fine Woodworking site in america, there will i am sure
be lots of details. others here might also know where you can get a link.

but this construction would give you strength and light weight.

Someone around here made a table along similar lines with jigsaw shaped pieces I've searched around but cannot find it. Perhaps someone else can?

I agree with Paul (engineer one) that a torsion box construction would be the lightest and strongest. You could then laminate or veneer with the surface of your choice.
