I have just removed a stump of an old blackthorn tree from my garden.

Now, I am happy to store the parts of the trunk that remain, for future turning (lots of pva glue needed to seal the ends), but am unsure about the roots - one of which is about 150mm in diameter, another about 100mm in diameter. There would be some good material there for boxes, small vases, weed pots etc if it turns OK. Has anyone turned any blackthorn root before? Do I treat it any different from the trunk sections to limit splitting? Any advice gratefully received.

Turn the same as any other woods but keep your tools sharp it is HARD!!. Main thing to be aware of is that the grain in roots is different to that in the main wood and can take some crazy twists so don't use full speed. Oh yes, depending how clean it is try and make sure there are no stones in it, face mask is essential. Hope this helps
