I was recently cleaning out old magazines & came across a photo of a
wooden toy sea serpent of early 1900's vintage. So I promply copied it
and a pic is attached.

I really like this one Lee. Can you tell us how it was finished. It looks like a good choice for this.

Because all of the toys I make are donated at Christmas to inner city kids
I usually do not apply a finish due to all the recent hoo haw re Made in China toys containing high levels of lead in paint. However, reliance on contrasting wood colored species does not always lend itself to some projects hence, for those I exclusively use non-toxic water based paints.
This toy as well as the crocodiles posted earlier employ such paint.
In the case of the sea serpent, a base color of gray was applied with a brush. This was followed by daubing with a sponge using a mix of green &
yellow, then over daubed with red.
