Hi.

I'm looking to build a Thien top hat separator.

Going to use a 20" dia dust bin as the collector, the question is, with a 20" dia , what should be the approx height?

The top and bottom will be made of Ply or MDF, unsure at the moment .

I want the make the circular sides from some sort of clear plastic, but i need advice as to what is the best type and thickness of plastic for this job?

Anything else i should consider?

Thanks Guys

Thanks alan, but its purely the clear plastic i was interested in.

Thanks Roy. Yeh thats exactly what i'm aiming for, only with clear sides...btw any more Salvagers on the horizon?

Thanks Paul, I do want to make myself and hopefully at a fraction of Chems price.

cheers

Any polycarbonate(better than other ones as tougher) more than 2mm thick will be difficult to bend to shape for your application.
Commonly available ones of between 1,5 to 2mm thick should be fine as it will be held rigid by the support from the top and base plates.

You should easily be able to bend 1.5mm poly into that radius, anything thicker might be a bit of a struggle and 1.5mm should be more than strong enough over such a small area.

Hi,

If you search the site you will see numerous ways to implement a transparent side wall or even a top panel. You will see a debate on the characteristics of various types of plastic, their durability, their suitability.....but its up to you.

Polycarbonate is by far the strongest as a ratio to thickness of the rigid plastics to use particularly if using cold bend method as it's main strength is it's flexibility. One of the most effective demonstration techniques we used was to fix a panel of 6mm into a frame and give volunteers a sledgehammer to break it. Nobody ever managed.
You can also heat bend it of course if small enough to get into a domestic oven (electric) though you could also easily bend acrylic or pvc in this manner as well.
You will be able to get a cut to size bit from a local distributor of semi finished plastics (Amari are one group), or from the internet.
If you want technical info and recommended minimum bends etc. look on the Rhom website as one polycarbonate is pretty much the same as any other. They should also be able to list distributors.
If acrylic, you would be able to use extruded as well as cast for this application as it should be cheaper and you don't need glass clear finish.
