Hi guys. I want to put a thick plane blade like 4 or 5 mm in my QS plane. I don't like
the chip breaker. Also interested in how it would perform with the thicker blade. Just
like doing stuff differently.

Where can I get such a thick blade? I see that LV sells 3/16 thick blades for
wooden planes, but with shipping it would be about 50 euros. I think also
Ray Iles makes custom plane blades, no idea of how much it would cost.
I am looking at ebay for old plane blades. Hopefully I can find a thick laminated
blade so sharpening would be easier.

Alternatively I am thinking of buying 3mm thick steel and just glue it on a
stanley plane blade, that makes it 5 mm thick.

Adjusting will be with a hammer or perhaps file a slot like in the chip breaker.

Thanks

Just use a wooden plane? Buy a woodie (double iron is normal), remove the chip breaker, make a new wedge. Job done.

Hello,

Just back the cap iron right back to 2mm or so. It won't work as a chip breaker, but will keep the adjuster slot and essentially a cap iron thickens the blade into something thicker, in much the same way as your thinking of gluing a piece on would perhaps do. You will have to make sure the plane mouth is super tight to avoid tear out, though.

Have you got issues with the cap iron, they work well if correctly set up?

Mike.
