With finishes say if an item is used in a lounge with no risk of damage to the item can a basic finish be placed onto the project.

Now if hot cups and plates and there are animals and children in the room would the finish have to be something more hard wearing?
So how exactly do we know what is the best finish for the job in hand.

Finishing is another extensive subject Colin. There are several good books covering the various types and methods - Complete Illustrated Guide to Finishing by Jeff Jewitt would probably suit you.

The basic answer to your question is to decide on the finish based on the environment where the piece is going to be. Hot, cold, dry, wet, children, dogs etc. etc. there are numerous situations and you just decide on the best option to suit; be it Polish (Shellac) Lacquer, Vanish, Wax, Oil - and of course there are several types and options within each category!

Get a book; have a read and you'll pick up the basic picture, which will allow you to experiment a little and see what each does, how it looks and how it reacts. You'll get it - don't worry!
