Why does this dowel plate I've made take me back to the time I first time I held a mallet? 
I picked up a piece of steel section when down at the scrap yard foraging for some brass plate. It is not stainless steel but still very hard. Which is why I was busy with it for longer than I had bargained for. Still it makes good dowels if the grain is straight.
Hope it inspires other folk to make one too. A piece of steel like this only costs about a euro in a scrap yard.
