Just been playing my weekly game of squash, when suddenly 'POP' and a searing pain in my calf and down I go.

Torn calf muscle - Grrrr! :(

One week to holiday in France - Double Grrr!

Ahhhh...that's a bit of bad luck. Will restrict you rather a lot, but hopefully you will still benefit from the holiday, unless the insurance will allow you to re-schedule?

To be honest, with the kids holiday times and the Missus being a teacher, next couple of weeks is the only time to go, even if insurance said yes.

Hey, as Glynne said, cheese and wine should solve most problems!

Sympathy? In the OED halfway between Sh.. and sy... 8)

Greg,

I empathise. Try multiple rum and cokes. Doesn't do the pain any good, but it helps to ignore it.

Cheers and get well soon.

The same thing happened to me and I was standing still waiting to serve at the time. You have my sympathy.

Cheers, John. I'll give anything a try!

Greg,

Good man! But seriously, when you are fit again, may I suggest you play more frequently? (My playing days for any sport are over, but I did notice years ago, that the more one plays, and the fitter one is, the less likelihood of injuries, especially of stress injuries.)

If you can't play squash more often, do you indulge in any other kind of exercise? Light weight -training helps a lot. Fast reps, and groups of three sets always did it for me.

Please forgive me if I am teaching egg-sucking.

All the best.
John :)

My own fitness is such that, were I a dog, my "owner" would be receiving stern looks and cautionary advice from the vet each visit!

I sympathise tho man, torn muscle isn't good, better than the tendon though, it'll heal pretty quick. Keep up the anti-inflammatories whether you feel at the time you want pain relief or not, and it'll heal faster.

I'll bet you didn't do any warm up and stretches, did you? We get away without them at sixteen, but the further from that you get, the more important they are!

I may be a wreck, but it's not from negligence, just lack of a decent repair, returns or spares service for us meaty things... ;)

Sounds good advice.
The Missus will be none too please as she has so far refused to drive in France. This year could be the big test!!

Don't worry the way things are regarding driving to France you will probably be stuck in a traffic jam for 7 days!

Get plenty of painkillers and one of those neoprene muscle supports

My wife sprained my ankle she stumbled and pushed me over and landed on me, I was walking arm in arm with her sister at the time but she insists that wasn't the reason.
I have pulled my Achilles tendon in the same ankle so double the fun!
It happened a couple of weeks ago so its on the mend now.

Pete

I once got a black eye for walking arm in arm with my girlfriends sister...... after that I always remembered to get dressed first lol

Thank you all, gents. And no, John, egg-sucking advice always well-received.

I did warm up, though possibly not enough! My squash partner never warms up properly and he did the same thing a year or so ago, so I am pretty careful about it. Could have been exacerbated by strenuous digging of leyladni roots earlier.

I do partake in fitness with the kids at judo, (though don't do the judo part), so am generally pretty fit, so feel a bit hard done by, but hey, as you guys say, it should heal OK as it's muscle. A mate snapped hi achilles a few years ago and he was in hospital for weeks then plaster and crutches for months - never want that injury!!

And max respect to anyone who is truly disabled, long term - I salute you

I presume that you will still manage to do the most important things in life.

The fun things that you enjoy. Like getting into the workshop?

Not just at the moment, Malcolm. Can't stand for too long.

Physio reckons give it a few days of gentle stretches and slowly increase weight transfer through bad leg. Should be well on the mend in a few weeks.

Will have to keep watching the cricket repeats instead - lovin' it!!

Sorry to be a bit late in here but I have only just found the thread.

If the pain is right down the calf then something that might help is to see if there is a particular sore spot about 2 to 3" below the knee slightly out from the centre? It's called a 'trigger point' and is a spot where the muscle can really tighten up when it's over stretched. Some gentle massage of the spot can release it and help with the pain by releasing the muscle. There are 'trigger points' all over the body and it's amaising just hpow many aches and pains SWMBO and I have sorted by using them. It may sound quack, but it works so much of the time, costs nowt and no drugs.. We now have a book about them and it gets used quite a lot. Called The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook.

Good luck with your holiday! You didn't say which bit of this lovely country you are coming to? If you want as good a weather forecast as you can get have a look at this

http://www.meteofrance.com/previsions-m ... /metropole . Just trype the village/town name in and it gives the forecast for there.

I too used to play squash until about 35 years back. Stroud Rugby Club, freezing court in December, warming up and a mighty back hand. There was a crack and my mate thought I had hit the wall. I said golly gosh several times and dropped my racket. I tried to finish the session but gave up very quickly. I had dislocated the scaphoid bone in my wrist! 3 years ago I had an operation on my right wrist and part of that was to remove the bloody bone. I came to the opinion that I loved playing squash, but it ain't afr dangerous!!

John,

Cheers for that - I'll take a look at the trigger point info.

We're off to Bordeaux for a week, then Loire/Brittany border, (Fougeres).

I loved Carcassonne when I started travelling in 1990. If we get to go again, I'll drop you a message in advance and try to meet up.

Greg

This site is the French version of G Earth and a lot better for here in that they also give you the IGN maps to go with the overhead views.

http://www.geoportail.gouv.fr/accueil

Opt for the Advanced version, trype in where you want and 'Chercher', then select the 'Carte IGN' on the left top. You can get rid of the wide banner on the left by the likkle arrow at the bottom and also make the map/overhead full screen with the diverging arrows to the left of the 'Demonter le temps.'

Yes, when you get down this way again give me a yell and we will see about meeting up   We haven't been to Bordeaux yet, but it's on the list!!
