I've offered to make a telescopic stand to display a club banner which is shaped like a shield. I thought a brass telescopic post standing on a wooden tripod would look right, but don't know where to source the telescopic tubes. Anyone any experience of this?

Roger, brass tube manufacturers should be able to supply tubes that have the correct diameters to slide inside each other. Another option would be a second hand projector screen stand.

Maybe a work support stand would be suitable for adaptation - it wouldn't be too hard to get it plated. If you could find a stainless one it could be polished...

Brass, or at least brass plated, tube is readily available as wardrobe hanging rail. You could build a square-section lower pillar, with a square plate inside, to which the tube was attached. The square would keep the tube vertical. A pin from the rear could lock the post at different heights.
