Suggest a Scroll-saw book ?

My birthday next week; as usual my family are stuck for ideas
As I am new to scrolling I thought perhaps a book on the subject

In particular I fancy compound scroll sawing which I have been trying this week
Any recommendations much appreciated

Hi Cordy

I have three books by Diana Thompson on my shelves. They are:-
3D Patterns for the Scroll Saw
Compound Christmas Ornaments for the Scroll Saw
Wooden Chess Sets You can Make

They are all exclusively 3D projects by a designer who specialises in compound patterns. There is nothing too taxing in any of them and I've completed a few of the patterns from each book. I could recommend them all but I think it depends on what might interest you.

I also have a book called 128 Compund Saw Patterns by Sam Keener. These are 3D patterns but are a little different in that they produce a finished model that is a cat if you look from one direction and a dog if you look from another..or a cat and a mouse...etc. I like the quirkiness of the idea but find that the patterns are more roughly presented, almost looking hand-drawn. I made a 3D cut which was a combination of a knight and a dragon from this. It was reasonable when produced.

I'd be inclined to go for anything by Diana Thompson as a preference

IMHO the scroll saw handbook is the Scroll Saw bible.

If you are new to scrolling I would recommend you get a copy of Scroll saw handbook by Patrick Spielman ISBN 0806947705 you can buy it second hand on Amazon for around £5 inc P&P
