I have a chuck mounted steb drive as anyone got one and what do they think is a safe working speed when mounted in a Nova chuck with std 50mm jaws.

I shall be turning some 38mm oak and some 100mm ash
thanks Olwyn

If I have my Axminster chuck, with the O'Donnel jaws fitted, in the lathe and I need to do a bit of spindle work and not change the chuck my steb drive gets put in the chuck instead of the morse taper and I haven't had any problems with it. I don't tend to do very much large spindle work so the highest speed is selected unless it is very badly balanced.

I haven't have anything 'exit stage left' through the window yet! :p

Hello Olwyn

Sorry, I misread your post. The information from Chas refers to faceplate work.

According to Keith Rowley, for spindle work

Up to 65mm square 2000/1500 rpm for workpieces up to and over 600mm long resp.
65 -100 mm square1500/1000 rpm for up to and over 600mm long resp.
Over 100 mm square 1000/750 rpm

Cheers

Dave
