After reading the post about staining an oak bowl I remembered a video that was posted about spalting and the colours it can produce. I was unable to find the post again but did some searches and found another video by the same Professor Dr Sara Robinson who has spent 11 years studying spalting.

I think some may find it interesting

also found this article about home spalting

Contrary to popular belief it seems you can get results in about 12 weeks.

I think her name is Dr Seri Robinson, well according to her Da Vinci lecture. I prefer this 20 minute one where one reply to all the recipes for spalting that she receives " I don't pee on mine & I can create spalting in 12 weeks". :)

Edit: You were correct her name is Dr Sarah Robinson

For those worried about health hazards - 13m30s (in my 1st link) By kill it I mean just take away water & it will die (microwave) ... these are just forest fungi & it's really hard to keep them alive even in the lab so they are of no consequence to you.

That explains why I could only find the Video I put the link for. Whoever posted the other one got her name wrong.
Might give some of he ideas a go and see what comes of it.

I have a log from a Tree of Heaven and it has some crazy Fungus growing on it some are dyeing the wood Purple and some are Red so I'm thinking of taking a sample to use at a later date or make the dye/stains she has made.

As stated in the videos it is possible to collect fungi samples from trees in the woods. I would also suggest protective gloves when handling the fungi as they are still live until the wood is dried. As we are in similar latitudes to the northern USA I would think we have some fairly similar fungi to them. As she states in the video the chances of anything dangerous in the air is very remote. If you can walk in the woods/forest without any ill effects then so long as you are not eating the fungi there should be no problems.
