Beautiful.
I am not really sure what spalted wood is. As I understand it it is caused by a fungus ? If so could it still be active ? Is there any concern there for food vessels ?

Yes you are right about the fungus or rotten wood LOL and I understand your concern but once it is dried out the fungus is non active dead and sealed into the wood when the bowl is finished making it safe for food

I like the shape and the grain pattern that you have - good work.

However, I would concur with Graham's comment that spalted wood should not really be used for a vessel to contain food, and I would have used a food safe oil finish rather than acrylic spray.

:)
I wasn't actually implying that, just trying to educate myself.

This is an age old debate with spalted wood I have been making fruit / salad and pasta bowls with spalted wood for 20 odd year granted with an oil finish and have never had any complaints as I said before all the wood is sealed in but we all have our own opinion and I respect yours I just don't agree I guess we will never know the real answer and i wouldn't do for us all to be the same would it

Woody,

If you have been making food receptacles out of spalted wood for 20 years plus, then I would bow to your much greater knowledge and experience than mine. I am going on what I have been told and read about (mainly on the internet) - I would still use a food safe finish even if the spalting was not a problem.

As you quite rightly say - vive la difference!!
