A sub-group of the Ottawa Woodworkers Association started this year for those interested in learning about hand planes. The first meeting concentrated on the restoration/fettling of pre-war planes, primarily Stanleys. The second meeting was concentrated on what is sharp and how to get there. The latest meeting was on using the fettled and sharpened planes. As an added bonus, Rob Lee lent us a few of the jewels of the LV collection. It was the first time I have ever seen, never mind had a play, with a Holtey smoother - pure jewellery. There was a Sauer and Steiner panel plane - what a beast - weighs a ton and works exquisitely. The favourite of all concerned was the Marcou smoother - what a performer. All three were tried out on some beautiful but very nasty cherry. Glass finish when done. I should note that my LV BU smoother performed almost as well as the foregoing. There were two Bridge City planes there as well, but we couldn't try them out - the transformer block and the variable pitch smoother. Serious eye candy. I'm not sure if I can post photos here, but you may view the pictures I took here: <http://s797.photobucket.com/upload/albums/jackinnepean/> on page 2. Let me know if you have problems viewing.
