Oh Knowledgeable Ones,

I have been given the piece of hawthorn below. What do I do with it? It's not vey long - no more than 6", so can't see a bowl and the shape ain't too regular - so suggestions on a postcard, please. (Bearing in mind I'm pretty new to this lark and have basic tools - so no deeply complicated suggestions involving hollowers, etc!

TIA

Rustic like Chas suggests, hawthorn is a gorgeous wood and you will find all sort of colours in it. Lovely piece. If in doubt PM me for my address LOL.

Hey,Greg, that looks a right bit of rubbish. I suggest you send it to me and I will dispose of it in a suitable manner.

Greg Chas has a good idea. I would like to see a picture of the other side as this could be a very niece small shallow natural edge platter/ bowl Regards Roger Courtney

Thanks for the suggestions, guys - even yours, Neil!

Chas and Woody, can you tell me what you did on the other side - is it bowl shaped, or just flat?

I'll get a picture of the side and back for you, Roger. (Hope you are both well and ready for Christmas - Your turning caused quite a stir at our house party - and I did credit you!)

Thanks for your help gents,

Greg

If you click the image in my post you should be taken to a thread showing other views.

Here's a link to something similar:-- and how it was held a few posts down.

If the porposed 'Bowl' depth is not deep enough to accomodate a screw chuck then a Hot Melt glue block can be used.

Thanks Greg You and your family have a blessed Christmas and We wish youAnd your family all the best for the New year Regards Roger C

Here are the side and 'back' (probably future base), views;

So it's about 20cm (7") tall and max back width of 25cm, (10") diameter.

Hope that gives a clear enough picture.

Looking at that log, and assuming the wood is reasonably sound I would spend some time exploring the possibility of slicing it into two or even three slices down the length.
That way you will salvage as much as possible of the wood and have side grain to work with on the bowl faces.

As you can see from the cherry piece above you do not have to have a flat base, but can provide a level support by making a stubby foot to fit to the bark side and form a three point support.

Hi Greg My advise would be to seal the ends if needed and put the piece aside for a while in a spot where you can see it every time you enter the shop it will speak to you in time I do this a lot. Look at all the pic of pieces posted on the forums and check out some web sites of Aussie turners for ideas. I will keep coming back to this and see what I would do now I know the sizes.Could your lathe cope with the piece as is. Regards Roger C

Thanks again, guys.
I like the idea of leaving it awhile. I don't want waste it so will practise on plainer bits first.
I have a Nova dvr so IT can easily handle the piece as is - I'm the weak link :-\
Cheers
Greg

Then its time to invest in better ventilation or up the medication :ho2 :ho2 :ho2

I also have one or two random pieces set aside waiting for inspiration  and not wanting to 'waste' them.

Hi Nev & Greg I have a shed load of pieces in plastic bags with sketches of what they are to become but life health and being self employed gets in the way. New year should be better. New medication "ie" enough work till May and only takes up 2 weeks per month and the shop door is open and extraction running all year round so look out for a few pics in 2013. Regards Roger
