Sizing an Axe handle

It's a hammer handle you need like a few others have pointed out. An axe head socket is quite slender so an axe shaft will not fit that.
Its got a home made look to it and may be like Tom said and forged from an old ball peen. A roofers hatchet/hammer usually had a notch for pulling nails.
