Hi. Am new to forums and hope I'm doing this correctly. Have just signed up with UKW as need some advice on replacing the NVR Switch on my SIP 01344 PT. I haven't had much success on the SIP website as there seems to be a lack of diagrams hence unsure of the part number.

Switched the machine on and it blew the 13Amp fuse in the plug. Replaced fuse, tried again, no luck. Checked replaced fuse which was still ok. Checked each of the three safety switches with meter and all were ok. Tried again with still no luck. Opened switch box and couldn't see or smell anything unusual. Stripped relay and reassembled but as said, all looked ok - no corrosion . Reassembled and tried again. It started. This is ok but I'm reluctant to believe all is well as something was not quite right.

Would like to line up the option of replacing the Switch if needed. Any advice?

Thanks.

The switch is not likely to be the cause of blowing fuses directly.

Check the starter capacitor by substitution with anothe good oner. Buy on ebay as Motor run or Motor start capacitors.
There are several reputable sellers there with a wide range of types.
They are available with flying leads or spade tags to suit the original style
If you can fit in a motor run type - these will last longer.
Get the same/similar capacitor value (MFD or uF) and at least the same voltage working as marked on the original.

DONT try and buy from SIP - they will charge you a lot.

Thank You Myfordman. I'm amazed that someone within the 70 million population of UK has already read my query. Shall contemplate forums more in the future to solve problems. I'll take your advice and check the cap but not sure if this will solve the problem as I mentioned that the motor does start now after fidling with the NVR switch. Will try and have the cap tested at work in electronics dept. Shall report my findings. Thanks again.
Neilin.

 Apologies, I missed the bit when you said it was now working. Possibly no need to test the capacitor.

I still can't quite see why a switch problem would cause fuses to blow unless there is some form of braking scheme fitted.
Manufacturers have different ways of trying to meet the stop in 10 sec requirement so their machines can be eligible for professional use.

I dont know a great deal about these things, so the suggestion is from a lay mans perspective:

On this model, there is a 3HP motor isn't there?

Could this be drawing a bit much current on occassions- hovering around the 13A, so sometimes popping the fuse, sometimes not? It looks like the 01344 has had a few different motors fitted over the years, but this one http://www.woodworkuk.co.uk/forum/viewt ... =16&t=8891 had 3hp, the latest a bit less.

After I replaced the fuse it still would not start and did NOT pop the fuse again. After fiddling with the relay on the NVR switch it started. It looks like an overload switch (heat) could have cut off the power but I don't think the machine has such a device fitted. Does it maybe?? I did have a workshop vaccuum connected and running before I switched the PT on when it blew the fuse. I'll try and investigate it the 01344 has an overload cut out.
Thanks for your replies. I could really get into this forum thing.
