Hi all,

Bit of advice sought for what ought to be a fairly basic project.

There's an internal step in my parents' house which at 16" is a bit too tall. They're asking if I can put another step in to make it more manageable. I've not really done anything that needs to be structurally sound before.

The floor and step are tiled. There is a brick wall one side and a breeze block wall on the other, it's part of an extension.

My basic idea is to use some timber to make a nice solid frame. I'd rather not bring the tile up from where the step will go as if I break it I won't be able to replace it. Instead, I'd like to place the frame on the tile floor and then anchor it to the wall either side. I'll then make a nice cover and secure that on the top and front.

The idea I have for a frame is a five sided box with decent internal support. A nice thick layer of plywood top and bottom should, in my mind, spread the load nicely over the tile floor and eliminate any chance of a tile cracking. I'd rather over-engineer this.

Does this make sense? Is there a more routine/obvious solution? Is it more dangerous than I think to leave it on the tile floor?

id just lay some blocks (walls not wood) down on a mortar bed to make the step up then tile/board ontop. Can tie it into the wall etc if you wanted with some fixings.
