Shortening a fence

not speaking for anyone else, but I always finds a horizontal handsaw cut tricky to get right, gravity isn't where it should be. I'd screw or clamp a guide rail and use whatever power saw you have, preferably with a fine tooth, pulling towards you

Ok folks I have decided against a circular saw (at least initially) as I reckon my reciprocating saw will do the job. If it doesn’t then a hard point saw is next up.

I have fixed some battens as guides and am now waiting for the fence to dry.

I learned that horizontal is not necessarily good. The fence has a slope so I had to choose a line parallel to the top.

Thanks for all the input and suggestions - got me thinking about the options.

Just an update - the reciprocating saw worked a treat. The coarse blade ripped fast through the uprights and not too untidily. The posts took a little more work to trim, but probably easier (for me) than using muscle power. And I did not need to purchase any extra tools!
