The green and wetter end of the M4.
September. An Oriental rice bowl and chopsticks.

The first question will probably be - what's the difference between a rice bowl and any other bowl?
answer: a rice bowl looks like a rice bowl.
do an image search and whilst there are a thousand and one shapes they mostly have a similar shape. Also I believe that a rice bowl will usually be held in one hand whilst chop-sticking with the other. Apologies if I am incorrect.

Usual rules:
Open to anyone and everyone.
New work only please.
To be made on the lathe using wood turning tools.
no minimum or maximum size.

Can be made of multiple woods if desired
Decoration, colouring, texturing is allowed, but again remember its about the turning
The bowl does not need to have a food safe finish unless it will be used for food.

Please post 3 or 4 images of your work along with a brief note about how you made it, what tools and finish you used, what wood (if known) and the objects dimensions etc.

1 showing a general view
1 showing a top down/ internal view
1 showing an underside view
1 optional photo showing any other feature you think might be of interest

Image size please use image size 640 x 480 0.3 mp, same previous months

Please upload your pics and description between ..

10pm on the 26th
and
10pm on the 28th

After this time the thread will be locked for Judging
Results will be given on or around 30th

This months judge will be Paul Hannaby.

Any entry's that are outside the rules and requirements will not be judged
The Judges decision is final ( Any negative comments re judging must be via PM only and not on the open forum )
NO Critique or comments on any work until After the Judging and results please.

Any questions please post them in this thread. Have fun! and just a reminder ANYONE can join in.

The monthly challenge roundup

you spotted my deliberate mistake Taz. #-o

We'll keep this one for sept and do the oriental bowl next month - give us all plenty of time to find a nice piece of timber for then.

At least with a themed month there is no particular size or shape blank required so there's less of a reason not to turn one in ;)

thinking caps on!

Hi Nev, have got the nice timber for the oriental bowl and sticks, I planned ahead for this month. What I haven't got is a nice piece for the delicate, was getting that on the next Yandles visit, so will pass this month.

While we are changing months. Why don't we move Christmas Ornament to November (from December)? For two reasons it will be ready for use in December ie Christmas and secondly it may inspire others and they have some time to do it between end of November and Christmas

Not a bad idea Brian, may well do that :)

DOH, am i missing something here?

No. :)

Just to clarify - This months challenge is , as originally planned, an oriental bowl as per the top post in this thread.
(when i originally posted this thread I misread my own list #-o and said that it would be something else. I have since corrected and edited this thread.)

So this month = bowl
next month = delicate

Hmmmm ok I will put the piece I have been working on on the shelf until next month. At least it will give me time to get all the parts ready for turning.

Now to find a blank for a bowl and some chopsticks.
Be gentle with me I am only a beginner

Hee hee, me too. I had a plan for delicate, so will shelf that until next month. I am currently on bowl #4 after being beset with things going BANG all of a sudden, and I don't like the shape. Back to the drawing board then.

Do we need to sign up on the scoreboard? Only I can't find a link anywhere. I fancy a crack at this and next months.

No Kim, Nev has dropped that requirement, just post your entry in the submissions thread when it's opened to enter.

Oh bum! I missed the deadline for this one, family matters got in the way. I didn't like the bowl in any case, and didn't have the opporchancity to turn a replacement.
Never mind, next month...... I've got an idea for delicate....

Horrible soft focus on the photo, and a bowl I never did like.

Apologies if this turns out to be a massive photo, but photobucket changed their settings so I have no idea how to resize stuff nowadays.
