Hi i,ve had this old plane for a few years but always wondered about its background, it has no makers stamps, the handle is Rosewood and the sole is dovetailed any ideas on age would be a bonus :?

The plane is 8" long by 2" 1/4 the blade is stamped Hargreaves and the iron cap is stamped Wards, as always when we acquire these tools you hope you have found something special but this plane is so pretty i dont care if everyone has got one.

That is very pretty MP....nice little smoother.

I don't recall seeing the sole shape before...but it is very nicely formed.

Whereabouts are you in Kent? With that nick I guess somewhere down on the south-east coast?

You must have the gift my friend though....having Konrad reply to your other post on his very first outing!

Class!

The iron is a Hearnshaw Bros...maybe not original but dates from 1881 onwards....in fact they were only taken over by Thomas Ellin in the 60s according to WL Goodman.

WARD cap iron suggests it may originally have had a WARD iron too...which would be about right. I would say it was a quite late infill...end of the Victorian era. The infill is very nicely made. Maybe the Prof would have heard of Hargreaves but I can't find anything at the moment. It could of course be the owner's stamp.

More pictures if you have them may help.

Jimi, am I wrong or does this have another "bent" lever-cap like yours - where the screw on the lever-cap engages the cap-iron at an angle way off 90°?

Cheers, Vann.

It looks very similar mate......but the only way to tell is to take it out but on this one that doesn't look possible.

One thing though I forgot to say...it doesn't look Scottish....probably Sheffield or London maker.
