Hi

I agree with Rhossydd. They are the same as the Axminster ones which are next to useless!

Actually I prefer the traditional style marking gauges myself.

Chris

So, sadly, in summary... Rutlands market a crap product at almost double the market price. Then on a special offer you can buy twice as many as you need marginally cheaper than elsewhere, trying to convince you that you have made a huge saving. This is why I refuse to use them any longer.

If it's the same tool as sold by APT, I wouldn't describe it as 'rubbish'. It's just not as well made as it appears in the photos.

Mr t described it as next to useless. I didn't actually write rubbish, the auto correct chose that as a replacement for a mild word that I had chosen myself!

I think the level of dishonesty implied by that is enough evidence to reject the firm.

There's nothing 'dishonest' or even misleading implied by my comment. Nothing to get worked up about.
It's simply good advertising ensuring that products look as good as possible when photographed. If you look carefully all the aspects of what makes it a disappointing product are there to be seen. The edges of the milled surfaces are precise and sharply defined, as are the knurlling on the locking knobs. That may be an example of good machining, but in practice it simply isn't as nice to hold and use. The only other aspect that isn't shown in the photographs is the choice of thread which isn't particularly fine, so making small adjustments isn't quite so easy.
The overall 'feel' isn't as good as the Veritas, so I didn't buy the APT version.

I wouldn't bother anyway. The trad wooden ones are a fraction of the price (new about £5 as a rule) and work brilliantly. The supposed problems are delusory and just part of a sales pitch. In any case you need several, which would make these daft modern gadget a big expense.
There are loads on ebay, including interesting varieties otherwise unavailable, often only £1 or so.

Thanks guys :) You're right the Veritas one does look nice, plus the bar and roller are offset from the centre giving you more "face" on the workpiece, not a great deal of point having extra at the top section.

I do have a traditional one, and haven't used it much as it sticks in colder more humid weather, making adjustments a pita, despite being of bit better type than the standard cheap "nail through wood" type.

On the subject... here's an different take on it: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SCREW-STE...lectable_ToolsHasdware_RL&hash=item461c8f0e64

Would be difficult if it sticks. You need to sand it gently - it will never stick again and will be easy to adjust.
