This may have popped up before in the many threads on making router tables - if so then apologies!
I've been having some bathroom cladding done with Wetwall - this is a panel that consist of a plywood core with a decorative laminate face and a laminate backing (it goes under several names). Now these panels are only about 11mm thick, but as people have mentioned difficulties in obtaining suitable material for making a router table top, I just wondered if anyone had ever tried, or considered, using this stuff in some sort of sandwich? Can't say I'm likely to be trying it myself in the foreseeable future, but it might be worth a thought for someone with a whole lot more experience than I've got to see if it would be suitable.
Full size sheets are about ninety quid from someone on EBAY - no idea how that would compare costwise with other methods.
