I was asked yesterday if I would look at a roof which was leaking, with a view to repairing it.

When I got there, it turns out to be a six sided summer house with green mineral felt roof, wooden finial protruding from centre top and a wooden lath nailed down each join.

The felt is in very good condition as far as I can see. Looking at the inside there is a little blackish mildew spot, high enough up that, I think, the damp could only be getting in at the finial.

Normally I would run a mile, but they are a nice older couple who appreciated help I gave them in the past.

I am wondering if there is some kind of cap I could fit that would come down 12" / 300 mm and seal it.

Finials can be tricy to seal.
If you need a good mastic, for use on a dry surface Wickes gutter sealant is really good stuff and stays flexible.
Wickes also do a sealer for using on damp roofs, it's water based and says all this on the tube.
I've used both at different times and both are very good!

Personally I would make a cowl from a piece of 2ft x 2ft code 3 lead. It will probably take a couple of hours to dress it properly without creases. Then I'd trim the "hem" and lift it back off. Bed it back down on lead sheet sealant and do a final dress. Bin the finial on your way out :)

Alternatively, soudal make a product called FixAll. There's a glass clear version that's about a fiver from eurocell. It'll seal virtually anything and can be used even under water!
